But pregnancy and delivery are extremely complicated processes. Sometimes the complexity results in panic. To avoid these complications, it is better to know the whole procedure. If the doctor has not been able to share his/her knowledge with the mother, it is better she gets hands to knowledge and resources via BOOKS. If she reads such books during her pregnancy it will help a lot during her delivery and the entire process as well. Such books are known as pregnancy books.

What do you mean by pregnancy?

Pregnancy is the period during which one or more offspring develops inside a woman. It is also known as gestation. Multiple pregnancies mean more than one offspring such as with twins. Pregnancy can happen through sexual intercourse or assisted reproductive technology. Childbirth usually occurs around 40 weeks from the start of the last menstrual period. This is just over nine months where each month numbers 31 days. The developing offspring during the first eight weeks is described as an embryo. Then following fertilization, the term fetus is used until birth.

Stages of pregnancy

Pregnancy is normally divided into three trimesters. Week 1 through 12 constitutes the first trimester. It includes conception which is the period when the sperm fertilizes the egg. The fertilized egg then moves down the fallopian tube and connects to the inside of the uterus. It is where it begins to form the embryo and placenta. During the first trimester, the possibility of miscarriage is at its highest. Week 13 through 28 constitutes the second trimester. During the middle of the second trimester, movement of the fetus can be felt. At 28 weeks, most of the babies can survive outside of the uterus if high-quality medical care is provided. Week 29 through 40 constitutes the third trimester.

Laws for pregnant employees in India

India has already provided many maternity benefits through the Maternity Benefit Act, 1961 (The MB Act). The MB Act is applicable to an establishment with 10 or more employees. It must provide paid maternity leave of 12 weeks to a female employee. But she must have worked for 80 days in the preceding 12 months with the organization. The law also framed paid leave to provide in other specified cases. Such cases include medical termination of pregnancy, a miscarriage or pregnancy-related illness, along with payment of a medical bonus in case the employer is not providing any free pre-natal confinement or post-natal care.

Abortion in India

Abortion in India is legal in certain conditions. It can be done on various grounds until 20 weeks of pregnancy. In notable cases, a court may allow a termination after 20 weeks. If a woman gets a voluntarily terminated pregnancy from a service provider, it is called induced abortion. Spontaneous abortion is the process of abortion which starts on its own without any intervention. In colloquial language, this is also known as a miscarriage.

There are three categories in abortion. They are:

  • Safe abortion: It is provided by health-care workers and with methods recommended by the World Health Organization.
  • Less-safe abortion: It is performed by trained providers using non-recommended methods. Or it is done using a safe method but without sufficient information or support from a trained individual.
  • Least-safe abortion: It is done by a trained provider using dangerous and persistent methods.
